“Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.” – A Liberal Decalogue (1954) Eccentric first appeared in English essays as neologism in 1551 as an astronomical term meaning “a circle in which the earth, sun, etc. deviates from its center.” Five years later, in 1556, an adjective form of the word was used.
129 years later, in 1685, the definition evolved from the literal to the figurative, and eccentric is noted to have begun being used to describe unconventional or odd behavior. A noun form of the word – a person who possesses and exhibits these unconventional or odd qualities/behaviors – appeared by 1832.
Eccentricity is often associated with genius, intellectual giftedness, or creativity. People may perceive the individual’s eccentric behavior as the outward expression of their unique intelligence or creative impulse. In this vein, the eccentric’s habits are incomprehensible not because they are illogical or the result of madness, but because they stem from a mind so original that it cannot be conformed to societal norms.
English utilitarian thinker John Stuart Mill (b. 1806) wrote that “the amount of eccentricity in a society has generally been proportional to the amount of genius, mental vigor, and moral courage which it contained, and mourned a lack of eccentricity as “the chief danger of the time. Edith Sitwell wrote that eccentricity is “often a kind of innocent pride”, also saying that geniuses and aristocrats are called eccentrics because “they are entirely unafraid of and uninfluenced by the opinions and vagaries of the crowd”. Eccentricity is also associated with great wealth. What would be considered signs of insanity in a poor person, some may accept as eccentricity in these people.
Accordingly, there are two types of eccentric thinking and behaviors in life. The first ones are those eccentric ones that happen to be considered as normal in due course of time and change is the necessary law in this world and the other ones and types are those eccentric matters— eccentric thinking and behaviors are considered as eccentric in every age and century and century since society could not adapt such behaviors even if time changes in due course of time.
When such thinking and behaviors are borne before their time and age, such given and forms of thinking and behaviors will win over on what the existing society think and behave since it is just matter of time. Time shall tell to everything than what such conservative people in the society think and behave since their motive behind creating such fire is their personal and selfish desire and interests. They can create all kinds of fire in everywhere, but as time goes by, there will be nice ice water that come and cools down the fire and things will change and such eccentric thinking and behaviors will be normal, in fact, they could be the core of society’s life and activities as time goes by.
For example, when Jesus Christ was telling those people around, it is the day of Sabbath created for man, not man is created for the day of Sabbath, this was one of the eccentric thinking and attitude to those societies which assume that Sabbath was the end of everything and none can abrogate such a law. He did that, but they cursed and crucified him. But in today, every Christian consider such practice as normal, in fat with pride and ergo. But Jesus gave his life to the attainment of such given practice in today.
Being eccentric mean, being unique or exceptional, odd or unconventional, in one aspects, but when such being exceptional is done for the sake of being unique, it is useless since there is no point of being unique due to the fact that every individual is distinct and unique being, and there is no need to make any effort and energy towards such kinds of deliberations, but rather such state of being come into place as result of peoples’ own deliberation and decisions they make in life.
There are few things that visit everyone’s life without our own consent, they just come into our homes and lives, and they become part and parcel of our identity and reality since people cannot avoid such a thing. In this case, the good thing one should consider in here in life is on the mechanism and methods of l8fe which such people should devise in order to have or create certain compatibility with the surrounding environment along with the inner models of such given social reality.
While such theater of life is going on, eccentric people become victims of society’s existing way of life since they are not compatible with what they claim as values and such given eccentric people do not agree with such people or given society value judgments and value since society is composed of individuals and such values are formulated by such people especially few individuals perception and given understanding in life. In this case, eccentric people do not understand and agree with such society thinking since they know the drama behind and they do not give special importance to such society thinking and values and they always prefer to go by their own. None can reverse this dram since it is not only impossible but necessary to reverse.
